Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise as just a young girl. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, let her pursue art literature and the theatre in daylight. DuVernay was captivated by the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt showed the film to DuVernay. DuVernay discovered through her example that art can be a vehicle for activism. DuVernay developed a social mindful by her mother. While DuVernay lived in Compton with her family she lived at Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The summers she spent in Alabama's Selma would inspire her later to make an animated film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and earned diplomas in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. Her first job was as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being given the responsibility of looking over the home and looking through the waste from one of the juries. The duties she was required to accomplish left her unsatisfied and so, after deciding not to pursue a career in journalism, she shifted to the world of publicity. DuVernay was immediately hired from college to be a junior publicist at an unassuming studio. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. The company launched a number of promotional and lifestyle networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
